Frequently asked questions

Is this the same Gaviscon sold in the US, or a different formula?

Different formula entirely. US Gaviscon uses aluminum hydroxide and magnesium carbonate as its active ingredients and works as an antacid. UK Gaviscon Advance uses sodium alginate and potassium hydrogen carbonate — a completely different mechanism based on forming a physical gel layer on the stomach contents. If you have been recommended the alginate-based version by a UK-trained doctor or pharmacist, or used it while living or travelling in the UK, this is the product you are looking for. It is not available in US pharmacies.

How does sodium alginate work?

Sodium alginate is a natural polysaccharide extracted from brown seaweed. When it contacts the stomach contents after swallowing, it reacts to form a thick, viscous gel that floats on the surface — this is sometimes called a ‘raft’. The potassium hydrogen carbonate in the formula reacts with stomach acid to produce carbon dioxide, which aerates the gel and helps it stay buoyant. The mechanism is entirely physical: alginate is not absorbed into the bloodstream. According to UK brand documentation, the raft can remain stable for up to four hours per dose.

Is it safe to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

UK Gaviscon Advance is widely referenced as suitable for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, including on the official UK brand website. This is partly because the mechanism is physical — the alginate does not enter the bloodstream. That said, as with any product taken during pregnancy, you should speak with your doctor or midwife before use. This is particularly important if you have any kidney, heart, or electrolyte-related conditions, or if you are on a low-sodium diet, as the product has a significant sodium content per dose.

Does it contain sugar, gluten, or allergens I should know about?

The formula is sugar-free, gluten-free, and vegan-friendly. It does contain methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216) — parabens used as preservatives — which may cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. It is also relatively high in sodium: approximately 212mg per 10ml dose, or 106mg per 5ml dose. If you are on a low-sodium diet, or have heart failure, kidney impairment, or reduced kidney function, consult your doctor before use.

What is the dose, and how long does a 150ml bottle last?

The standard dose for adults and children 12 and over is 5–10ml after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day (maximum 40ml in 24 hours). At 10ml per dose, four times a day, the 150ml bottle lasts about 3–4 days. At the more typical 5–10ml once or twice daily after main meals, it lasts one to two weeks. Most people use it situationally rather than at maximum dose every day, so the bottle stretches considerably depending on your pattern of use. Children under 12 should only use on medical advice.

How fast will it ship, and is this authentic UK stock?

Yes — this is the original UK Gaviscon Advance, imported directly from authorized British distribution, made by Reckitt. The label, leaflet, and packaging are in English (UK). We hold stock on our US warehouse shelf and ship within 24 hours of order, with tracked delivery in two to four business days to most of the continental US. No international transit, no customs wait. Stock is rotated regularly so you receive a bottle with a generous remaining shelf life.
