Bioderma Photoderm AR is a tinted SPF50+ cream built for one specific skin profile: reactive, redness-prone skin that struggles with standard sunscreens. The natural tint lightly evens the complexion while the formula protects — one step that does what many people need three products to achieve. Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, water-resistant, photostable.

Why it works

Two things usually go wrong with sunscreen on reactive skin: the formula irritates, or the finish turns the face pale and chalky. Photoderm AR solves both. The base is designed around exceptional tolerance — fragrance-free, paraben-free, hypoallergenic — and the tint is the opposite of ghostly.

  • Rosactiv™ complex — Bioderma’s patented blend of Glycyrrhetinic Acid (licorice root derivative), Ectoin, Mannitol, Xylitol, and Rhamnose. Included for its soothing, skin-comfort properties on skin that flushes easily in response to heat, UV, wind, or emotion.
  • Sodium hyaluronate + Glycerin — humectants that keep the texture from feeling dry or tight, especially important for skin that tends toward sensitivity and dehydration simultaneously.
  • European UV filter platform — a modern, photo-stable broad-spectrum system covering UVB and full UVA range, including ultra-long UVA. Water-resistant and stable in direct sun, so the protection level holds through a normal day.
  • Iron oxides as natural tint — the "natural tint" shade is built from iron oxide pigments, which blend on fair-to-medium complexions and also help filter visible light — an added comfort layer for light-sensitive skin.

Why we stock it

Photoderm AR is one of Bioderma’s most specific products — built for a narrow but underserved use case that no mainstream US brand addresses well. It is widely available in French, German, and Scandinavian pharmacies but not stocked in standard US drugstores. How to use

Apply as the final step of your morning skincare, evenly and generously across the face and neck, before sun exposure. A thin layer reduces protection — be generous. Allow a minute to absorb before applying makeup. Reapply every two hours during prolonged outdoor exposure, and immediately after swimming, sweating heavily, or towel-drying. Avoid contact with fabric — the iron oxide tint can transfer on light textiles.

Frequently asked questions

Is Photoderm AR actually fragrance-free?

Yes, confirmed. The formula contains no added fragrance, perfume, or aromatic ingredients. It is also free from parabens and hypoallergenic. This is one of the reasons it is specifically recommended for reactive skin that flushes or reacts to standard sunscreens — the most common irritant triggers have been removed from the formula. The scent profile is neutral to very faintly cosmetic from the base ingredients, not a perfumed smell.

Will the tint match my skin tone, or will it look orange or ashy?

The natural tint is a single shade designed for fair to light-medium skin tones, built from iron oxide pigments that sit warm-neutral rather than pink or grey. It blends in rather than sitting on top of the skin, so the finish reads as ‘your skin, evened out’ rather than a visible colour deposit. On very light Northern European skin tones it adapts well. On deeper medium skin it may appear slightly light. It will not leave the white or grey cast common to mineral-only sunscreens. If you have deep or dark skin, the tint is likely too light and the coverage will be visible.

Can I use it under foundation or other makeup?

Yes. The texture sets to a smooth, satin finish that layers well under liquid or powder foundation without pilling. Apply Photoderm AR as the last step of skincare, allow about a minute to absorb and set, then apply makeup on top as usual. Many people with reactive skin use it alone on low-makeup days and under foundation on days that require more coverage — both work well. The tint also means foundation on top tends to look more even with less product.

Is it suitable for oily or combination skin, or only dry skin?

It works on a range of skin types. The texture is a lightweight cream — not a fluid or gel — with a smooth satin rather than matte finish. It is non-comedogenic, so it will not block pores. On oily skin the finish is comfortable but may require a light powder on top by midday if you are prone to shine. On combination or normal skin it tends to sit well all day. On dry and sensitive skin it provides a comfortable, slightly hydrating feel. It is not designed for very oily skin that needs a fully matte result.

How long does the 30ml tube last?

With daily face-only use, 30ml typically lasts four to six weeks. Sunscreen requires a generous application to achieve the labelled SPF — a thin smear lowers protection significantly. Bioderma recommends applying evenly and generously, which at the correct amount is roughly a quarter-teaspoon for the face and neck. If you tend to apply sunscreen lightly, the tube will last longer, but the SPF50+ protection level requires adequate coverage to hold.

How fast will it ship, and is this the same formula sold in European pharmacies?
